Research Co-Authored by Public Policy Student featured in “The Conversation”.

Iván Flores Martínez (UNC Charlotte Public Policy student and Research Assistant for the Drug Policy Program, Centro de Investigación y Docencia Económicas) and Daniel Zizumbo-Colunga (Assistant Professor of Drug Policy, Centro de Investigación y Docencia, and Research Assistant Professor, Vanderbilt University) recently wrote an article featured in “The Conversation”, an online nonprofit academic journalism organization. The article centered around their November 2017 publication, “Is Mexico a Post-Racial Country?” , which revealed that in Mexico, darker skin is strongly associated with decreased wealth and less schooling.

In the article, Martínez and Zizumbo-Colunga write:

“In Mexico, inequality, though rampant, has long been viewed as a problem related to ethnicity or socioeconomic status, not race. Our new report suggests that assumption is wrong . . . Indeed, race is the single most important determinant of a Mexican citizen’s economic and educational attainment, our results show.”
